Keeping Tally with Epidemius: Interview with Malte Hoefs, Fresh Off Going 6-1 at the Alliance Open!

Epidemius and Be’lakor team up to lead Chaos to success in Malte’s creative list

Chaos fans, you’re going to really enjoy this. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Malte, who recently crushed it and went 6-1 with a crazy Chaos list at the Alliance Open.

I’d always been intrigued by the potential of Epidemius as a buff for Nurgle Daemons, but Malte took that idea to it’s logical conclusion:

What if someone took Epidemius with Belakor and Iron Warriors Daemon Engines and Death Guard Daemon Engines?

“Seven… Seven… Seven…”

His list and playstyle seem awesome, and we had a lot of fun chatting about his run at the Alliance Open. Malte beat some very strong opponents along the way. Check out the interview below! Timestamps are provided. His list, and a summary of key takeaways Chaos fans should know, and provided at the bottom of this page.

Timeline

  • 0:00 – Introductions
  • 4:10 – The List
  • 11:25 – Secondary Choices
  • 13:23 – Discussing Matchups
  • 16:20 – Discussing CP Usage
  • 19:07 – Reviewing Games from the Tournament
  • 40:50 – Malte’s Tips for Staying Mentally Prepared

  • 54:00 – Malte’s Personal Favorite Legion

The Interview

Key Takeaways

  • Powerful Heroic Intervention tricks (all his melee threats are either Characters with native 3″ HI, or Bloat Drones which have a 6″ HI stratagem) can make up for a lack of durable objective holders in a list
  • Epidemius’s buffs remain extremely potent as long as you’re willing to build a list around them
  • Decimators are a very strong tool in today’s meta

Malte’s List (1996 Points, 7 CP)

  • Iron Warriors Patrol
    • Lord Discordant (Warlord, Daemonsmith, Mechatendrils Relic, Baleflamer)
    • 10 Cultists with a Flamer
    • 2 x Decimators with Soulburner Petards
  • Nurgle Daemons Patrol
    • Be’lakor (Pall of Despair, Penumbral Curse)
    • Epidemius
    • 1 unit of 3 Nurglings
  • Death Guard Outrider
    • Malignant Plaguecaster (Miasma of Pestilence, Curse of the Leper)
    • 3 x Foetid Bloat Drones with Fleshmowers
    • 2 x Plagueburst Crawlers with Entropy Cannons

I can feel for the guy that brought morty against epidimus. My friend brought epi to the field while I was playing my Belakor list. I think Belakor did most of the tally for him!
